  1. What I always wonder with these russian photos: What is it about this crouching position?

  2. Because it is cooler than Nike, and there’s no way Rebook is even considered.

  6. The two guys with blue shirts facing each other while crouching seems to be from another country, not Russia. Most likely Serbia, and the red grafitti on the wall reads “All girls are bitches”.

  7. Only now is the outside world learning of the Great Soviet Chair Purge of 1949… let’s just say that Stalin was not fond of chairs…

  8. So you’re saying it’s a picture of two Russians in Serbia..

  9. Fashion usually consists of imitating ones “betters”.
Someone comes back from a vacation you can’t afford dressed in Adidas togs? You need ’em.
Same reason classless oafs must have Cristal Champagne. Looks like prestige.

  10. Easy to maintain, save money on shampoo, and I look like Putin.

  11. Nope, not Serbia. Litva, maybe. And that red grafitti is not in Serbian.

  12. It’s same with chavs and Burberry.

  13. It’s kinda crazy how these guys won the space race and had so many geniuses.

  14. Here in denmark wearing a full adidas set of clothes is pretty much the same as getting the words “CRIMINAL DOUCHEBAG” tattoed on your forehead, but no one ever told them that to their face so they still do it. Maybe that’s the real crime.

  15. The crouching is from the times where Russians gathered in their Living rooms and just didn’t had enought places to sit for everyone, so some are just crouching and that’s ok. Children had to play outsite always and where sent outside much more than usually in the West. So it became natural to also just crouch in the outside.

  16. They should put a crouching man on the Russian flag.

  19. http://weirdrussia.com/2015/01/04/why-is-adidas-so-popular-among-russians/ The obsession with Adidas originates with 1980 Moscow Olympics. Sportswear for the Soviet team was manufactured by the German company Adidas. However, the USSR Communist party leaders forbid to put the labels of the capitalist company on tracksuits of Soviet athletes. Traditional three stripes were limited to one red. The dress shoes preserved its stripes, since the stripes resembled the letter “M”, stressing that the Olympics were taking place in Moscow.Although the company name did not appear on clothing, sneakers and tracksuits Adidas become wildly popular in USSR. Since then, it became THE sports wear label. Russian criminal subculture, known as Gopniki (Gopniks or Gopniki in Russian, plural of Gopnik), has own fashion preferences which often include Adidas tracksuits and dress shoes. cut and pasted from page.

  25. It is a thing from “jail culture”. People there chat in this crouching position so that guards or other “inmates” couldn’t hear what they are talking about.

  27. boletus edulis, is that true?
So, why the obsession with trademark Adidas and sport clothe?

  28. Friends, please let me explain. First of all Russians not obssesed with adidas outfits – its actually just cheapest outfits on market in here (its fake, counterfeit wear if you like. Made in China ). Second, 90% of those photo made by Russians who are just satirize the subculture called “Gopnik” – ГОПНИК (rus.) (subculture based on prison culture, and underground sport gyms culture). That subculture was popular in Russia in 1990 – 1996 in very poor neighborhoods of work class and vas caused by horrible standards of living back than (Including rising criminal rates in those neighborhoods).Whe (Russians) are not proud of that subculture and try to make fun of this is much as whe can. And it’s very sad that most of you think like this is like a regular russians look like. I wish you luck and lots of love from Russia. МИР, ТРУД, МАЙ!!! P.S. Sorry for horrible grammar mistakes (i was learning english only in middle school).

  29. All these photos Gopnik. In Russia adidas associated with redneck, stupid, who because of their stupidity probably his life in poverty. In Russia, a lot of “normal” people who are different from Europeans except a gloomy face.
    P.S From Russia, Ural.

  30. Same as cholos. Instead of khakis and pressed white t-shirts, it’s Adidas track suits. Shaved heads and the “prison crouch” very similar. Basically prison culture… keepin’ it gangstuuhh!

  31. I dont think that the crouching position is “Prison culture”, have a Slovenian friend and apparently they crouch like that in Slovenia too. They tell me its “easier on the back than standing all the time.”

  32. Gopnik (Russian: го́пник; IPA: [ˈɡopnʲɪk])[1] is a pejorative term to describe a particular subculture in Russia, former Soviet republics, and other East Slavic countries to refer to young men or women of sometimes lower-class suburban areas (usually under 25 years of age)[2] coming from families of poor education and income (sometimes), somewhat similar to American white trash, British chavs, Australian bogans and Scottish neds. The female form is gopnitsa (Russian: го́пница), and the collective noun is gopota (Russian: гопота́).

Gopniks are often seen squatting in groups (“in court” (на корта́х), “at the pictures” (на карташах), “doing the crab” (на крабе)).[4] It is described as a learned behavior attributed to Russian prison culture.[4] Gopniks usually wear Adidas tracksuits, due to them being popularised by the 1980 Moscow Olympics Soviet team.[5] Sunflower seeds (colloquially semyon (семки), semki (сэмки) or semachki (семечки) ) are habitually eaten by Gopniks. Consumption creates piles of discarded seed husks in Belarus known as splovvayutstsa (сплёўваюцца).

    21
  40. Crouching? Uou mean SQUATING. That is what slavs do. It is comfortable and if the ground is too dirty to sit on, you just squat.

  41. No. It is cooler but that is not the reason. In the Olympics in summer of 1980 i think, adidas sponsored the Soviet Union. ;)

  42. Because in the Summer Olympics of 1980 in Moscow, adidas sponsored the Soviet-Union Sporting clothes.

  43. Indeed

  44. I love trackies. Stop the stigma! 😁

  51. I like Nike they have more expensive and nettet quality tjans Adidas so why dont gopniks squat with Nike?

  52. I think its because russia is super cold, and there are barely any benches around, so they just squat while waiting for the bus

  53. Well said Anon. There’s a lot of snobs and judgemental fools out there. Wearing shirt and tie doesn’t boost productivity or turn people into Mr. Nicey.
