That deep, a creature has to be a predator or a scavenger to survive, and the latter only works if the bottom is nearby so that it can eat the dead whales, radiolarian sludge, etc that falls to the bottom. Near a hydrothermal vent, there are producers of another sort, so "non-predators" have options.
