i really really hate rap its not music it never will be and they make more money than i ever will
senseless_guy (Sunday, 5 Jul 2009)
Well I don't hate rap, but this simple comparison shows the difference between music and... rap. And I agree with the above, they make money for nothing and chicks for free.

As Gregg Allman once said, "rap" is short for "crap". What kills me about rap is that people pretend to relate to it even though it deals a lot with bling-bling, expensive cars, beautiful women and other things an average suburban kid couldn't possibly understand. I guess Will Smith was a prophet as parents just don't understand.
Warped (Monday, 6 Jul 2009)
Way to oversimplify and downplay all styles of rap into one genre. That's like me saying all rap is about is yelling and complaining about shit crawling in my skin and other emo shit. There's a buncha different types out there besides the mainstream stuff. Please don't try to think so much, leave it to people who are better than you.
Humbug (Wednesday, 8 Jul 2009)
Actually no, RAP is short for "Retards Attempting Poetry"
Maceio (Saturday, 1 Aug 2009)
Sadly true, but comparing Coltrane to Lil'Wayne is just bulls**t! And you cannot say that RAP = retard atempting poetry because it is part of a soulful culture called HIP-HOP (rap + graffiti + break dancing) and it is common sense that every culture has its idiots, and fakes and the real problem is that THEY get all the attention because the sell their ass to be famous (and freakishly rich) instead of keepin the culture alive. Lil' Wayne is to hip-hop culture what George W. Bush was to politics!

@Maceio: Uuhhh... You do know graffiti is illegal, right?

This actually makes me sad. Coltrane was a genius, and i'm glad he's not here to see what has happened to popular music. And that picture of Lil Wayne makes me want to smash my keyboard over the guy's head sitting next to me.

Muddy Waters, BB King, John Lee Hooker, Buddy Guy, the amazing Ray Charles...man, THATīS MUCIC. I mean, I just donīt understand rap music. I just donīt understand it. But anyway, each and everyone of us can use our ears to whatever the f**k, we want, yeah, whatever the f**k we can, yeah, uh, oh...yeah, now sing along!

...and Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole, Aretha Franklin, Chuck Berry, all the 60's Motown hits, and more more more. What a shame that black music has abandoned it's truly great heritage.

It would be more fair to compared Coltrane to someone like tupac or Tariq Trotter. You're picking the best from the past and comparing it with the worst of today :-/

Today's hip hop is crap. Definitely f**ing crap!. However, let's not forget classics like Rapper's delight, Grandmaster Flash's The Message, Afrika Bambaataa's Planet Rock. Those are GREAT songs. Yeah, they are songs AND they are rap. All the rap genre went downhill on the 90s, reaching level as of today's: total garbage.
Hip-Hop (Friday, 24 Jul 2009)
"Dance With The Devil" by Immortal Technique sums up the modern "Gangster Rap" scene perfectly (its grotesque stupidity). It is a great hip-hop song worth listening to. Hip-hop and rap are not the same thing. Please do not mix up the two.
ashagash (Wednesday, 8 Jul 2009) Reply
according to krs1 "rap is something you do and hip hop is a way of life". rap is not music. at its best it is skillful story telling spoken word poetry with clever rhythmic devices backed by inspiring "beats" (synthesized music, heavy on the bass, and drums). and at its worst its lil waynes crap. p.s. i dont get country music i think its terrible but im not going to take cheap shots at it.

Wow what an amazingly comprehensive history of modern African American music!! Popular music of all genres (country, rock, rap, etc.) is dumbed down, why is this picture suggesting that just because Lil Wayne is popular that black music as a whole has somehow devoled, like there isn't an endless amount of brilliant musicians of all colors and cultures out there making music. To all the people who say Rap isn't music... quit being morons, they said the EXACT same thing about Jazz during its rise to popularity. Just because you don't like or understand something doesn't discredit it from being music. Some of the most respected Jazz musicians in the world (Donald Bird, Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Branford Marlis, etc.) have played/made/produced rap records.... Haha damn I can't believe I let myself get drawn into this mess... sad shit.

Calling rap music is a brave claim because rap refers to rhythmic poetry. this means there is no pre-determined melody or really tonality of any sort. Of course, the claim that rap is music is by no means preposterous. Even John Cages composition "4'33" (a piece that is 4:33 of silence) is considered music by some. Either way I believe what you are intending to refer to is hip hop (Rap With harmony). Also I would argue that Jazz was treated as an illegitimate form of music for two reasons. First and most obvious is the fact that most early jazz artists were black at a time when our country was much more divided by race. Also Jazz did not conform to western music theory at the time, because of the genres frequent abrupt key changes and further stress on chromaticism. Hip hop on the other hand is considered illegitimate music by many because it often does not have a distinct melody and is likely to feature the same four bar harmony repeating for an entire song. It also isn't treated with legitimacy because of some of the views expressed by some of the genres more prominent artists. I hope this has cleared some stuff up for you guys.
Mhm,,,, (Thursday, 9 Jul 2009)
Hold on, hold on, hold on. Did you even look at the picture? Example one: Art, which requires creative thought, and some level of instrumental skill. Exaple two: Talking like a black guy for 3 minutes and making millions. Yes, They thought Jazz wasn't music back then, but they were wrong. They also called rock n roll ni**er music. But just because they were wrong 60+ years ago [When people were a lot less tolerant], doesn't mean they are now. Look at what you're saying. Rap takes no talent. It takes a synthesizer[gotta have something in background], a phrase to shell out 50 times in 3 minutes, and a mouth to say it with. There.

If you want to have fun, take some popular song, get it's lyrics and then discuss them with friends. Almost every song contains so stupid story it is painful to read :D ANY damn song. E.g. ice ice baby .. ok, so there is a baby, that is ice or cool - so? etc.

I hate to be that guy, but as a music nerd and a jazz bassist, I can say that the sheet music pictured on the top is NOT Giant Steps. Last time I check, that tune didn't have any ii-V's. In fact, that was the point.

Okay people, rap=/=Lil' Wayne. Jamming one genre into what's popular isn't intelligent whatsoever. Go listen to Talib Kweli, Mos Def, KRS-One, Blackalicious, Rakim, Slick Rick, Lyrics Born...all rap artists with intellect, so who combine live music with their lyrics. Lumping all rap in with what's popular is akin to me saying all rock is like Panic at the Disco. I don't think that's an apt comparision since Queen is nothing like Panic, in the same way Lil Wayne and popular music does not speak for all of hip-hop.

There's a big difference between rap and putting a beat behind poetry. I know, I'm a poet. Rap is pretty much a pathetic excuse at existence. Its ignorant rhymes and repetitive rhythms grate on my nerves and make my eardrums want to explode.
kris (Tuesday, 14 Jul 2009) Reply
God this is sooo true>< It just shows the simplicity that wreaks music today. There's no such thing as talent anymore in most cases :( I couldn't even call most rap "poetry" the lyrics are usually mindless and repetitive and talk about greed, lust and violence in disgusting and ignorant ways.

really y'all don't know what lil wayne means when he says he ate a shy bitch?

also yeah, saying that a milli is indicative of all rap music is silly. hell it's production style isn't a fair representation of tha carter iii. sorry that old folk don't understand what's happening with the kids today, old folks never have. sorry that your white kids co-opted their culture from the blacks. white kids always have. this is the same argument from the past fifty-sixty years. at least when it happened in the eighties we got that sweet kevin bacon flick. your ears will never appreciate the production values of hip hop. don't worry our children won't either. these are simple generation gaps. do your kids listen to your mungo jerry tapes? probably not. or at least not until someone samples that sweet ass summertime song.

your best bet is to skip out on this exciting form of art if it just makes you want to ride in a waaaahmbulance. there's plenty of culture out there for everyone. no need to be silly dudes.

Any mental midget that has to rely on using vulgarity, violence and sexually explicit language in order to sell an album can hardly be called a "musical artist".
Also, I wouldn't call the.. uhh... "rap culture" a culture at all, its more like a barrel of poisonous water that people eagerly drink out of, then wonder why they feel sick. Wanna know why "1 out of every 10 black men are in prison"? because they listen to this shallow, vile form of auditory sewage and try to imitate it.
